31/07/2013

By Languages Mentors Katrina Mackenzie & Sam Godby

During the recent school holidays and first week of term three,  Alexandra Hills State High School hosted 21 German exchange students from our sister schools, Eric Kaestner Gesamtschule and Harburg Goetheschule in Hamburg, Germany. This cultural exchange is a great opportunity for teenage students from overseas to experience the Australian lifestyle and culture, including high school life.

The students had a memorable time travelling all over Australia, going to places such as Sydney and the Whitsunday islands, as well as familiarising themselves with our wildlife and natural landscape. One of the highlights for the students was Becoming a student of Alexandra Hills State High School for four days was a definite highlight for our visitors, as they attended classes  from 8th – 11th July with their home stay buddies and got to experience the differences between German and Australian high schools.

Alexandra Hills has been involved in this exchange with our German sister school for 12 years now, and the students always love seeing the way our high school works. It is definitely a high point of the exchange, and gives real insight into Australian education and culture.

Some of our year 10, 11 and 12 Students who study German will be travelling to Germany on an exchange to experience their school lifestyle in November this year. This is a great opportunity for our students to improve on their language skills as they are involved in a month of authentic German culture. This year, students from Alexandra Hills will be attending the same sister schools who have just visited our school, and re-uniting with their home stay buddies from these past two weeks.
