Junior secondary

Junior Secondary School, Years 7 to 9 at Alexandra Hills SHS is a distinct phase of schooling that focuses on providing experiences that develop the fundamental cognitive, social and emotional needs of adolescents.  We provide a range of learning and social and emotional experiences for all junior secondary students to ensure maximum engagement on a daily basis. We acknowledge that socially and emotionally happy students achieve better academic results and are more likely to be engaged in classroom and extra-curricular activities.

Alexandra Hills SHS provides many experiences for junior secondary school students including:-

“Alex & Me!” Welfare program

Our unique Junior Secondary Welfare and pastoral care program is delivered to all Year 7, 8 & 9 students and has been designed to align with Education Queensland’s Learning and Well-being framework. “Alex & Me!” helps develop emotional and social skills necessary for happy and healthy resilient students.  This program also develops a strong sense of well-being which has been recognised as an important element needed for success at school. Topics in the program that  have been identified by our students as those important to adolescents include getting organised, friendships, anti-bullying, goals and values, focussing on the future, communication and relationships and online safety.

Year 7 Incursion Days

Three half day incursion days focusing on specific needs of our Year 7 students occur throughout the year.  The half day programs support our “Alex & Me!” program and focus on developing a sense of belonging and team building, adolescence and puberty, resilience and personal safety. The days are run in conjunction with outside providers, community resources, our school nurse and school welfare personnel.

Taskforce

This unique group of junior and senior students work towards developing action plans, health promotions and activities specifically for junior secondary school students.  They present items regularly on assemblies that endorse an awareness of issues that affect teenagers and provide strategies for improvement. The Taskforce also promote and organise our annual Christmas Appeal encouraging students and staff to donate items for food hampers for the local community at Christmas time. They work closely in conjunction with the Redlands Community Centre to provide support for members of the community doing it tough. The Taskforce also run a ‘Buddy Bench’ at lunch times to provide activities to help unite members of the school community together and form multi-year level friendships.

Homework Club

The Homework Club is a weekly initiative to provide a supportive environment for junior secondary students to complete homework, study for assessment and work on assignments.  Students at the Homework Club work in conjunction with classroom teachers and senior leaders to ensure successful completion of school work and assessment and have access to laptop computers, reading texts and numeracy and literacy activities.

Junior Secondary Leadership positions

A range of leadership positions and opportunities are available for our junior secondary students to become involved in the life of the school. These leadership positions mirror the senior leadership positions and enable junior students to experience leadership roles and responsibilities whilst being mentored by staff and the senior student leadership team. Leadership positions include Junior Secondary School Captains, Junior Sporting House Captains, Junior Taskforce, Chaplaincy leaders, Tech Crew and Student Council and Heads of Committee. Successful students are recognised during a valued junior secondary leadership badge ceremony in Term 1 of the school year.

Motivational Media

Motivational Media is an annual multimedia presentation delivered to all junior secondary students which focuses on making good choices, conscious planning for the future, making the most of opportunities and making a difference in other people’s lives. Motivational Media is a program which inspires students to not let their past determine their future. It encourages students to start today and make a difference in their lives. Motivational Media uses 3 large cinema screens, current popular movie excerpts and music to deliver an engaging and entertaining program.

Curriculum area events

As part of the elective curriculum in junior secondary our students are exposed to a variety of learning experiences and opportunities throughout the year.  The many subject areas including Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Business, Industrial Technology and Design, Home Economics and Media offer our students the opportunity to not only learn and develop skills but also to put these skills into authentic practices such as the Year 7 Coffee Shop morning tea, the design and development of a recipe book, the annual Visual Art show and Performing Arts parent and community performances and competitions.
