​Catering

 

Catering provides students with the opportunity to explore the area of food and a range of cooking skills from basic to more advanced. This course will enable students to gain knowledge and to investigate the core food groups, nutrition and cooking principles to effectively produce products which match design challenges.

Fashion

This subject is designed to put theory into practice, helping students to become more independent and to develop investigative, technological and practical skills. This course will enable students to gain knowledge and to investigate sewing techniques, fashion trends and garment and fabric care.

Senior Fashion introduces students to the varied aspects of the Fashion Industry together with the foundation concepts of creative design and construction. Fashion makes a valuable contribution to any future career choice because in this subject students learn to work in groups, solve problems and make decisions independently, think creatively, be organised and work independently 

Home Economics

Home Economics core focus is on the well being of the individual and the family.  In this subject we aim to develop knowledge, attitudes, skills and values which will be effective in personal and family living.  The diverse range of subject matter is presented through practical experiences.  It is this application of theory to practice that makes this course such a valuable learning experience.   

 

Certificate III in Children's Services

Students are offered an opportunity to attain their Certificate III in Children’s Services whilst still at school via a partnership between Alexandra Hills SHS and the Registered Training Organisation – My Other Mum Childcare and Training. Certificate III in Children’s Services is required to be an assistant at a child care centre. Placements are for the full day, one day a week over two 10 week periods.  These placements are during school time and are a compulsory part of the course. Students can build on this course when they leave school by doing a diploma to become a group leader in a child care centre.

Certificate III in Aged Care

Students are offered an opportunity to attain their Certificate III in Aged Care while still at school via a partnership between Alexandra Hills SHS and the Registered Training Organisation – My Other Mum Childcare and Training. Students complete 14 modules of theory which they then put into practice when they do work placement in an aged care facility as an assistant.  Placements are for the full day, one day a week over two 10 week periods.  These placements are during school time and are a compulsory part of the course. Students can use this certificate as a stepping stone to nursing. 

Certificate II or III Hospitality

While this course focuses on a number of areas of the Hospitality industry, a significant focus is on food and beverage service. The focus of all units is a practical one and students are expected to participate fully. Students run the hospitality cafe during the school day. Some assessment will be conducted out of normal lesson time e.g. evenings to enable students to experience real-life hospitality experiences.  Placements are for the full day, one day a week over a 7-10 week period.  These placements are during school time and are a compulsory part of the course.  If a student is doing a traineeship they will achieve a Certificate III in Hospitality.

Hospitality SAS

This subject includes a range of practical topics to develop an understanding of the hospitality industry. It provides students with t he opportunity to develop knowledge and skills related to employment within the industry. The focus of all units is a practical on and the students are expected to participate fully. Some assessment will be conducted out of normal lesson time, e.g. evenings, to enable students to experience real-life hospitality situations.
