Queensland Debating Union (QDU)

The Queensland Debating Union competition allows Years 7-12 students to participate in debates against other schools. Teams are asked to develop arguments and rebuttals for relevant and interesting topics. Debates are either prepared with knowledge of the topic in advance, or are “short prep” and prepared an hour before they are delivered. Debating is a highly enjoyable activity to be involved in and can help to improve a range of skills such as:

  • Writing
  • Public speaking
  • Research
  • Creativity
  • Critical thinking
  • Confidence

There is a direct link between debating and improving students’ results across all subjects. Similarly, debating equips students with useful skills and knowledge for when they leave high school. There are also opportunities to meet new people in the school as well as debaters from other schools.

Sign up for debating

Sign on for debating is announced in notices during Week 2 of Term 1. Participation costs $10.

The competition runs from March to June with finals rounds occurring in second semester. There are teams for every year level, with opportunities for students to debate “above level” where places are needed. Each team works one-on-one with an experienced debating coach, with meetings held on a regular basis during a set lunchtime.

The debates for each year level are held at different locations across Brisbane. Starting times for debates are from 6-8:30pm.

School Blazers are compulsory for these events and will be supplied.
